London Mayor Sadiq Khan kicks off the process of pedestrianising Oxford Street

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan will today host the first meeting of his expert team driving the redevelopment of Oxford Street, marking the first step in the process of the world-famous street being pedestrianised.

The inaugural meeting of the Oxford Street Development Corporation (OSDC) Board will outline the shared vision for Oxford Street and define the key dates and priorities going forward as regeneration begins.

Backed by a majority of people in the capital, the regeneration of Oxford Street will see the world-leading urban space become fully pedestrianised and barred to car traffic, among other changes aimed at improving the attractiveness of the area to consumers and businesses.

Nabeel Khan has been appointed as chief executive of the OSDC, bringing considerable experience in urban planning and having been involved in major regeneration projects across the capital.

He led the development and delivery of Lambeth’s Kerbside Strategy to reimagine streets as people-centred spaces that prioritise movement, accessibility, and experience. He also supported Be First in delivering Industria, the UK’s first multi-storey light-industrial workspace.

“Today’s meeting is a major milestone in our work to revitalise the nation’s high street and create a truly world-class leisure destination,” Khan said.

“Bringing the diverse knowledge and insight of our new Board members together with Nabeel Khan’s regeneration expertise will help us to unlock Oxford Street’s true potential, as we continue building a better and more prosperous London for everyone.”
