Government issues warning to UK pensioners receiving winter fuel payments

With millions of pensioners set to start receiving their Winter Fuel Payments today, the government has warned of a surge in scam activity.

From Wednesday 12 November, pensioners across England and Wales will receive between £100 and £300 in Winter Fuel Payments.

These payments will be made automatically throughout November and December, and the amount pensioners receive will depend on whether they live alone or as a couple, as well what other benefits they are entitled to.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has warned pensioners to be especially vigilant of scammers, as it has recorded a 150% surge in scam activity around Winter Fuel Payments.

Scammers often pose as government officials or payment providers and attempt to trick pensioners into sharing their personal information.

The DWP warned pensioners to look out for scam messages, stating that anyone who receives a text message inviting them to apply for a payment should not engage with it, and they should instead forward the message to 7726.

The Department added that it would never ask pensioners to provide bank details to receive their Winter Fuel Payment.

The majority of pensioners should see their Winter Fuel Payment reflected in their bank account by mid-December.

The DWP said it is committed to supporting pensioners with the cost of living and noted that thanks to the Triple Lock, the State Pension is expected to rise by up to £1,900 over the course of this Parliament.

“From today, nine million pensioners across England and Wales will benefit from the Winter Fuel Payment hitting their bank account,” said Pensions Minister Torsten Bell.

“Payments are being made automatically throughout November and December, so don’t worry if yours hasn’t arrived yet.”

“But do remember to stay alert to scam texts, the Government will never ask you to share personal information or click on links to claim your payment,” he said.
