‘Hope won’ – Sadiq Khan celebrates Zohran Mamdani’s New York election win
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has praised the victory of Zohran Mamdani in the New York mayoral election, celebrating the new mayor’s ‘historic campaign’.
In a social media post on early Wednesday, 5 November, Khan said that this election showed how a candidate with a hopeful message could defeat the politics of fear.
“New Yorkers faced a clear choice – between hope and fear – and just like we’ve seen in London – hope won,” Khan said.
“Huge congratulations to Zohran Mamdani on his historic campaign.”
With this victory, Mamdani becomes the first Muslim ever elected to the office of mayor of New York City.
He is also the first New York mayor to be born in Africa, and at 34 years old he is the city’s youngest mayor since 1892.
Mamdani ran as the Democratic nominee against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, securing a victory over both with a fresh left-wing approach that won over voters in the city.
His proposed policies include free buses throughout the city, the creation of five city-operated grocery stores to help improve competition and lower prices, and a rent freeze to help make the city more affordable for the majority who live in it.
Mamdani’s election has attracted the ire of many on the right wing of US politics, include President Donald Trump, who endorsed Andrew Cuomo and has previously called Mamdani an incapable ‘communist’.
Mamdani describes his own politics as that of a democratic socialist, and he directly addressed the US President in his election speech.
“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up,” he said following his election victory.
“To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
