Mayor Sadiq Khan spends £147 million to get Londoners working

Sadiq Khan Speaking

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has announced he will invest £147.2 million to help Londoners get the skills they need to find good work and progress their careers.

This commitment is part of an Inclusive Talent Strategy launched by the mayor and London councils today, Thursday 23 October 2025.

The strategy aims to help Londoners play their part in driving the growth of the city and reap the rewards of a growing London economy by acquiring valuable skills.

Khan’s £147.2-million in funding aims to unlock at least 150,000 high-quality jobs for Londoners by focusing on helping them to acquire the skills they need to succeed.

The programme will address the city’s chronic skills shortage, with businesses reporting more than 45,000 vacancies due to skills shortages, by linking employers with programmes that foster the skills they need.

Khan said he is focused on ensuring that Londoners are not left behind by the AI revolution, committing to work with partners in the city to ensure that every person benefits from the shifting economic landscape as a result of this technology.

With more than 250,000 economically inactive Londoners wanting to work but facing barriers to finding a job, this strategy hopes to make it easier for young Londoners and people with disabilities or long-term health conditions to access the support they need to get into work or training.

The mayor said that tackling inequality and improving diversity and inclusion in the workplace is a key priority for this strategy.

“Londoners will either be left behind by AI or seize its huge potential. That is why I have launched my Inclusive Talent Strategy in partnership with London Councils to ensure Londoners are equipped with the skills to harness the benefits of AI for higher-paid jobs,” Khan said.

“I know closing the skills gap is a generational challenge and this strategy is an important start, creating a truly diverse pipeline of talent across the capital.”

“Businesses will be able to recruit the talented people they need, because investment will be targeted at the courses which produce them. Ensuring Londoners, no matter their background, have the opportunity to get the skills they need to get a good job and a secure career,” he said.
