Sadiq Khan spends £220,000 to help Londoners claim benefits
London Mayor Sadiq Khan is extending his campaign to help Londoners claim benefits, investing up to £220,000 to help low-income households in the city claim the support they are entitled to.
This investment is an extension of the mayor’s campaign to help eligible households claim Pension Credit, which has helped more than 4,400 households in the capital claim Pension Credit benefits in the last year.
Khan said he would use this further investment to work with local boroughs and expand this campaign to help low-income parents and disabled Londoners who are entitled to benefits such as the Personal Independence Payment.
The mayor’s office cited an analysis from Policy in Practice showing that Londoners will miss out on almost £4.1 billion in unclaimed benefits this year, including £326 million in Pension Credit.
This amount of unclaimed benefits represents more than 1.1 million missed claims, at an average of £3,674 per household left unclaimed.
Khan urged Londoners to check their entitlements and ensure they are not missing out on any unclaimed benefits for which they are eligible.
“I am determined to do everything I can to support Londoners with the cost of living and I’m proud that my pension credit campaign has already unlocked over £40m in unclaimed benefits for older Londoners,” he said.
“But I know far too many people are still missing out on the vital support that they are entitled to, and it’s shocking that more than £4bn in benefits will go unclaimed across the capital – money that could be making a huge difference to families, disabled Londoners and older people.”
“That’s why I’m extending my campaign to help reach more Londoners on low incomes and urging Londoners to use City Hall’s Cost of Living Hub to check their entitlements to ensure they or their loved ones don’t miss out,” he added.
“As we build a better, fairer London for everyone, I will continue to work with boroughs, charities and communities to ensure more Londoners get the help they need to thrive.”
