Sadiq Khan hits back at Trump with latest London crime statistics
London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has published the latest violent crime statistics for London and hit back against recent statements by US President Donald Trump.
The latest figures for violent crime in London showed a decline of nearly 12% over the past year, with 8.749 fewer crimes overall.
This follows Trump recently accusing Khan of doing a ‘terrible job’, saying that crime in London was ‘through the roof’.
Trump made his remarks about Khan at the UN General Assembly last week, where he also accused the mayor of wanting to implement Sharia law in the city.
Directly addressing these sort of remarks in his statement on crime figures, Khan hit back against ‘misinformation’ about London’s safety.
“We’ve seen a number of politicians here and across the globe talking down London and spreading misinformation about crime and safety in the capital,” Khan said.
“The evidence is clear, our approach to tackling crime and its complex causes works. It’s driving down violence right across the capital.”
“Violent crime with injury is down in every single London borough and that is testament to the incredible work of our brave police officers – who are arresting more than 1,000 additional suspects each month and solving crimes that involve victims at double the rate they were a year ago,” he said.
Crime reductions were reported in every borough across London over the past year, with Havering seeing the largest reduction in offences, followed by Enfield.
Homicide, burglary, and gun crime have also fallen significantly since Khan became mayor, the mayor’s office said.
Over the past year, London recorded the lowest number of homicides of under-25s for more than two decades, and the capital’s homicide rate is lower than places like Paris, Brussels, Berlin, and Madrid, as well as all major US cities.
“One death and one crime will always be one too many and that’s why I’m working with partners and the Government, to build on this progress and enhance our collective efforts to drive down every single crime wherever it happens in our great capital city to deliver a safer London for everyone,” Khan said.
