Donald Trump calls Sadiq Khan a ‘nasty person’ who has done a ‘terrible job’
US President Donald Trump criticised London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan during his visit to his golf clubs in Scotland, calling Khan a ‘nasty person’ who has done a ‘terrible job’.
Trump’s comments were made during a press briefing with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at a golf property owned by Trump’s family near Turnberry in Scotland.
When asked whether he planned to visit London, President Trump said he would visit the city. However, he attacked Mayor Sadiq Khan, which prompted Starmer to intervene on the Mayor’s behalf.
“I am not a fan of your mayor. I think he has done a terrible job, the Mayor of London… a nasty person,” Trump said.
“I think he has done a terrible job, but I will certainly visit London.”
Starmer intervened to interrupt Trump’s criticism of Khan’s character, stating that he was a ‘friend’.
Trump and Khan have clashed numerous times in the past, with their feud beginning in 2015 when Trump was first running for President and Khan was running for London Mayor.
Khan has historically suggested that the values of Londoners do not align with those of the President, and did not congratulate Trump upon his most recent election victory.
During Trump and Starmer’s briefing, the US President also repeated his characterisation of illegal immigration into Europe as an ‘invasion’, stating that “Europe is going to is a much different place than it was just five years ago, 10 years ago”.
Asked about Reform UK’s Nigel Farage, Trump said that both Starmer and Farage were ‘good men’, adding that Starmer is ‘slightly liberal’ and Farage ‘slightly conservative’.
